Algorithm Pathfinder. Know where to play before you decide how to win.

Pathfinder is the research engine behind every Algorithm Organic strategy. It studies your customers, your competitors, what people search for and what AI assistants like ChatGPT and Gemini say about your category, then puts all of it in one interactive dashboard. Every finding has a source.

Two South African marketers and the Algorithm robot reading a glowing map of a market, with a teal path running through a gap between competitors

A whole market on one map: where the customers are, where competitors stand, and the open ground between them.

Most marketing starts with the answer. Then goes looking for the question.

Ask an SEO agency what your business needs and it starts with keywords. A paid media agency starts with media. A social agency starts with platforms. A GEO agency starts with AI visibility. Each one looks at your business through the service it sells, so the diagnosis is shaped by the answer before anyone has looked at your market.

That is how businesses end up with content nobody asked for, campaigns aimed at the wrong buyer and AI visibility work chasing questions their customers never ask.

Algorithm starts somewhere else. Before we decide what to build, fix or spend money on, we find out how your market actually works. Not as you assume it works. Not as one SEO tool describes it. As it is.

Channel first

  1. 1Pick the channel you sell
  2. 2Find work for that channel
  3. 3Hope it fits the market

Market first, with Pathfinder

  1. 1Understand the market
  2. 2Find where the opportunity is
  3. 3Choose the channels that fit it

Pathfinder establishes market reality before we try to change what the algorithms see.

A map of your market, built from evidence.

Before anyone builds a road, someone surveys the land. Pathfinder is that survey for your business.

It reads your website, studies your competitors, measures what people search for in each of your markets and gathers what real customers say in forums and reviews. It checks how AI assistants describe your category and who they recommend. Then it brings everything together in one interactive dashboard your team can explore through a share link, with no login.

Our strategists use it to make the calls that matter: which customers to go after, which products or services to push first and which channels should do the work.

An audit asks

“What is wrong with what already exists?”

Pathfinder asks

“What is happening in this market, what matters most and where is the opportunity?”

Pathfinder in one paragraph

Algorithm Pathfinder is a market intelligence engine built in South Africa by Algorithm. It combines customer research, search demand, competitor analysis, voice-of-customer research and AI search analysis into one evidence-backed dashboard. It is how every Algorithm Organic engagement begins, and it shapes the SEO and GEO work that follows.

Six questions every strategy should answer first.

None of these is new on its own. The value is in putting them side by side, so a customer complaint, a search pattern and a competitor gap can be read as one story.

Customer intelligence

Who is the valuable customer?

Who buys, what drives them, what worries them and how they make the decision.

Demand intelligence

What is the market looking for?

What people search for, how often, and how the language changes between markets and stages of the decision.

Competitive intelligence

Who owns the attention today?

Where competitors are strong, where they are exposed and where you are genuinely different.

Voice of customer

What are people actually saying?

The questions, praise, complaints and doubts customers post in forums and reviews, in their own words.

Market intelligence

What is changing in the category?

Where the growth is, what is shifting and which opportunities are worth real money.

Discovery intelligence

Where do people find their answers?

How Google, AI assistants, social, video and communities each shape the decision.

What it finds that most research misses.

Voice of customer

Your customers, in their own words.

Pathfinder collects the questions people ask, the things they praise and the doubts they raise before they buy, from forums, review sites and communities in each of your markets. For most clients it is the first time they have seen their customers' voice gathered in one place.

  • Real questions and notable quotes
  • Praise set against concerns
  • Budget expectations and the trust signals that close the sale
  • How the conversation differs from one market to the next
Two South African strategists and the Algorithm robot reading a competitor radar with three orange gaps no competitor reaches

Competitive blueprint

Where your competitors can be beaten.

Each competitor gets a profile. Then Pathfinder builds a gap inventory: what they do that you do not, and what you do that they do not. It finishes with the trust formula for your category, the proof buyers need before they commit. You see where the ground is already owned and where it is open.

  • Competitor profiles side by side
  • Gaps in both directions
  • The trust signals that decide the sale
  • Where demand exists and nobody serves it well

Before AI can recommend you, you need to know what it already believes.

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the work of getting your brand named and cited inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews. Most GEO starts by checking whether your brand shows up. Pathfinder starts a step earlier, by working out what the AI answers in your category are built from.

It looks at how AI assistants describe your market, which competitors they name, which sources they lean on, and where your brand is missing or misunderstood. That tells us whether each gap is about information, authority, or how machines connect your brand to what you sell. Those are three different fixes, and guessing wrong wastes a quarter.

It matters because the engines disagree. Across 170,720 citations in South African AI answers, 87.8% of cited domains appeared on only one engine, according to our research on who AI engines cite in South Africa. Being visible in one assistant says little about the others, so the research has to cover all of them.

What Pathfinder checks in AI search

  • How AI assistants describe your market
  • Which competitors they name, and how often
  • Which sources shape their answers
  • Where your brand is missing
  • Where your brand is misunderstood
  • How AI discovery differs from Google search

GEO is not the future of Organic. Entity-led Organic is, and GEO is one of its most important new expressions.

That is why Pathfinder does not bolt a GEO plan onto an SEO programme. Every Pathfinder dashboard closes on an AI and LLM strategy: the capabilities your brand needs to be understood by AI, and the pillar-and-spoke content plan that gets it cited.

Four steps from question to evidence.

01

Set the brief

We confirm your website, the two or three competitors that matter most, up to four target markets and anything we should look at closely.

02

Research the market

Pathfinder crawls your site and your competitors' sites, measures search demand in each market and researches the live web for customer questions, quotes, concerns and trust signals. Everything it finds is logged with its source.

03

Build the picture

AI writes up the findings from that evidence only. Every number carries its source, estimates are labelled as estimates, and where the data is thin the dashboard says so rather than filling the gap. Percentages and totals are calculated, never written by the model.

04

Decide what to do

You get the interactive dashboard. Our strategists use it to decide which customers, products and services to prioritise and what to build first.

Pathfinder provides the evidence. Algorithm provides the judgement.

AI gives the research its breadth and speed. People stay accountable for what matters and what happens next.

An interactive dashboard about your own market.

Not a PDF that sits in an inbox. One scrolling dashboard you can explore section by section, shared through a link that needs no login. These are the nine sections inside it.

01

Customer research

Markets, search demand, customer psychology, decision drivers and how people buy.

02

Competitive blueprint

Competitor profiles, the gap inventory and the trust formula for your category.

03

Personas

Three or four personas grounded in the research, not invented in a workshop.

04

Customer journeys

Seven stages from first discovery to advocacy, adapted to how your business sells.

05

Market by market

Demand, deal values, seasonality, competition and trust signals for each target market.

06

Voice of customer

Real questions and quotes, praise against concerns, compared across markets.

07

Demand intelligence

The themes people buy around and the offerings they buy together.

08

Opportunity sizing

Opportunity cards, growth signals and three revenue scenarios.

09

AI and LLM strategy

What your brand needs to be understood and cited by AI, and the content plan to get there.

How we deliver GEO

The “we understand you” moment.

In the first month, you see your own customers, competitors and opportunities reflected back, often brought together for the first time. When we present the strategy that follows, you have already explored the evidence it is built on. That is why it is easier to sign off and easier to measure.

Recommendations you can trace back to a reason.

Strategy is easy to present and harder to defend. Pathfinder builds an evidence chain behind every recommendation, so when you ask “why?”, there is an answer you can check.

Without evidence

“We think you should create this page.”

With Pathfinder

“Customers keep asking this question, the demand is there, competitors answer it badly and your site does not answer it at all.”

Without evidence

“You should make more video.”

With Pathfinder

“This stage of the decision needs a demonstration, and video is the best format to give one.”

Without evidence

“You need more authority.”

With Pathfinder

“Buyers look for independent proof at this stage, and your competitors have more of it than you do.”

The rules every Pathfinder run follows

  • No invented statistics
  • Every number carries its source
  • Estimates are labelled as estimates
  • Thin data is shown as thin, not filled in

When a client questions a number, it holds. The recommendation becomes a consequence of the evidence, which makes it easier to understand, approve and measure.

Pathfinder finds the territory. Entity Pathfinder maps the route.

Algorithm runs Organic in three stages: Uncover, Build and Scale. Pathfinder sits at the start of Uncover. It works out where to focus across your whole market. Entity Pathfinder then goes deeper on each priority to work out exactly what to build.

An entity is anything you need the market, and the machines, to associate with your brand: a product, a service, a category or an idea. Search engines and AI assistants are trying to understand those things. Pathfinder decides which ones are worth owning.

Uncover

Pathfinder

What market are we in, who is the customer and where is the opportunity?

Uncover

Entity strategy

Which products, services or categories should this business try to own first?

Uncover

Entity Pathfinder

Who buys this one, what do they need to know and what has to exist for them?

Build

Entity build

The pages, experiences and authority it needs, across search, AI, your website, social, video and communities.

Scale

Scale

Grow its authority and share of discovery, then move on to the next one.

Included from month one

Pathfinder is part of every Algorithm Organic engagement, at every budget, delivered in the first month alongside the Lighthouse market share and GEO analysis. The full month-by-month plan is in our guide to how Algorithm rolls out Organic.

Built into Lighthouse

Pathfinder runs inside Algorithm Lighthouse, our intelligence platform. Lighthouse measures your share of search and your visibility in AI answers against named competitors. Pathfinder explains the market behind those numbers.

Pathfinder, in plain terms.

What is Algorithm Pathfinder?

Algorithm Pathfinder is a market intelligence engine built in South Africa by Algorithm. It researches your customers, competitors, search demand, what customers say in forums and reviews, and how AI assistants describe your category, then brings it together in one interactive, source-attributed dashboard. It opens every Algorithm Organic engagement and sets the direction for the SEO and GEO work that follows.

Is Pathfinder an SEO audit?

No. An audit asks what is wrong with what already exists. Pathfinder asks what is happening in your market, what matters most and where the opportunity is. It includes elements of keyword research, competitor analysis, personas and AI search analysis, but its job is to decide where to focus, not to list fixes. The technical audit of your site happens separately.

How does Pathfinder help with GEO?

Pathfinder studies how AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Claude describe your market: which competitors they name, which sources they rely on, and where your brand is missing or misunderstood. That shows whether a gap is about information, authority or how machines connect your brand to what you sell, so the GEO work fixes the right problem. Every Pathfinder dashboard closes with an AI and LLM strategy.

Where does the data come from?

Your website, your competitors' websites, search demand data for each target market, and live research across the forums, review sites and communities where your buyers talk. Every finding in the dashboard is tied to its source.

How do you stop the AI from making things up?

The AI writes only from the evidence Pathfinder has gathered. It never invents a statistic: every number carries a source, estimates are labelled as estimates, and where the data is thin the dashboard shows that instead of filling the gap. Percentages, counts and totals are calculated in code, not written by the model. Then Algorithm's strategists review it and make the decisions.

What does my business receive?

An interactive dashboard about your own market, shared through a link with no login. It covers customer research, a competitive blueprint, personas, customer journeys, market-by-market detail, voice of customer, demand intelligence, opportunity sizing and an AI and LLM strategy.

When is Pathfinder delivered?

In the first month of an Algorithm Organic engagement, at every budget, as part of the Strategy Sprint. The full rollout is set out in our guide to how Algorithm rolls out Organic.

What is the difference between Pathfinder and Entity Pathfinder?

Pathfinder works at market level. It looks across your whole business and market to decide where Algorithm should focus. Entity Pathfinder works at the level of one product, service or category once it has been prioritised. It goes deeper on who buys that one thing, what they need to know, how they decide and what pages and information need to exist. Pathfinder finds the territory. Entity Pathfinder maps the route through it.

How does Pathfinder relate to Algorithm Lighthouse?

Pathfinder runs inside Algorithm Lighthouse, our intelligence platform. Lighthouse measures your share of search and your visibility in AI answers against named competitors. Pathfinder researches the market around those numbers: who the customer is, what they say and where the opportunity sits. Together they set the Organic Strategy.

Does Pathfinder work for any type of business?

Yes. It was first built for travel and hospitality businesses and has since been rebuilt to adapt to any type of business, whether you sell products, services or to other businesses. The research questions stay the same. The language and the journey stages change to match how your customers buy.

Know your market before you spend on it.

Every Algorithm Organic strategy starts with Pathfinder.
