Not every agency with a Google badge is the same. There is Google Partner status, which is awarded to agencies that meet a basic set of certification and spend requirements. And there is Google Premier Partner status, which is awarded to the top tier of agencies in each country that meet a significantly higher threshold across performance, spend quality, client outcomes and best-practice management.
Algorithm has held Google Premier Partner status for five consecutive years. That is not a self-awarded credential. It is not a one-time qualification. It is an annual re-evaluation against Google's own performance data across every client account we manage, and we have passed that evaluation every year for five years running, placing us consistently among the top performance agencies in South Africa.
This article explains what that status actually requires, why the distinction matters to clients, and what five consecutive years of it tells you about how an agency operates, beyond what any pitch deck or agency website will tell you.
Consecutive years as a Google Premier Partner
Annual re-evaluation against Google's own performance data across every managed client account
What Google Premier Partner status actually requires
Most agencies do not explain what earning Premier Partner status involves, because the specifics are demanding enough that vague language is safer. The requirements are not vague.
To qualify as a Google Premier Partner, and not just a Google Partner, the agency must meet stringent criteria across three categories simultaneously, evaluated on an annual basis.
Performance
Google evaluates the actual revenue outcomes delivered for clients running Google Ads through the agency. Not impressions. Not clicks. Not traffic. Revenue growth attributable to the campaigns being managed. The performance threshold is set relative to peer agencies in the same market, which means a Premier Partner is not just meeting an absolute standard, they are performing in the top tier relative to every other certified agency managing comparable spend.
Spend quality and portfolio breadth
The evaluation looks at the total managed spend across the agency's client portfolio, and at the quality of that spend, meaning how well it is structured, how efficiently it converts, and how consistently it is managed in line with Google's best-practice frameworks. High raw spend with poor performance does not qualify. The standard requires both volume and quality simultaneously.
Certification depth
Every member of the paid media team responsible for client accounts must maintain current Google certifications across the relevant product areas. Certifications expire and must be renewed. The agency's certification coverage is evaluated as a whole, not just whether the senior strategist is certified, but whether the team managing accounts day to day is fully qualified. This has direct consequences for how we hire and train at Algorithm, and it is one reason the team requirements for a Premier Partner agency are materially different from a standard Google Partner.
Why the distinction matters to clients
There are fewer than 40 Google Premier Partners in South Africa. Every other agency you evaluate is either a Google Partner (a lower tier with lower performance requirements) or holds no certification at all. Premier Partner status is Google's own independent validation that the agency's campaigns are delivering for clients, not the agency's self-assessment.
What five consecutive years actually tells you
Earning Premier Partner status once is an achievement. Earning it for five consecutive years tells you something different. It tells you the performance is systematic, not circumstantial.
A single year's Premier Partner result can reflect strong performance in a particular period, on a particular set of client accounts, with a particular set of conditions in the advertising market. Five consecutive years means the performance has held across multiple market cycles, across client account changes, across platform changes (Performance Max, broad match evolution, AI bidding), across team changes, and across the annual re-qualification process that Google runs independently.
Five consecutive years means the performance is systematic, not circumstantial. The people running accounts today were not all here five years ago. The system that produces the results has been here the whole time.
That is what framework-driven means in practice. Algorithm's positioning distinguishes between agencies whose results are tied to individual specialists and agencies whose results are produced by a repeatable system. The five-year Premier Partner record is one of the clearest external validations of the latter. This is the same principle that underpins our RACE operating model: a named methodology that outlasts any individual account lead.
What Premier Partner status enables for your campaigns
The credential matters. What it enables matters more. Being a Google Premier Partner provides access to capabilities and support that are not available to standard Google Partners or unqualified agencies.
Beta access
Premier Partners receive early access to new Google Ads features and product betas before they are available to the broader market. In practice, this means our clients are often testing and benefiting from new capabilities like AI-powered bidding refinements, new audience signals and new ad formats months before competitors whose agencies do not hold Premier status. Compound this across five years and the accumulated advantage compounds into measurable performance lift.
Direct Google support
Premier Partners have dedicated channels to Google's support and escalation teams. When a campaign encounters a technical issue, an attribution problem or a policy question that needs resolution, Premier Partners do not wait in the standard queue. The time to resolve these types of issues is material for clients running high-spend, time-sensitive campaigns.
Performance benchmarking
Premier Partners receive Google-backed performance data comparing their clients' campaign outcomes against benchmark agencies managing comparable spend in the same sectors. This benchmarking feeds directly into Algorithm's optimisation decisions, knowing not just whether a campaign is performing well, but whether it is performing well relative to how the best agencies in the market are managing equivalent campaigns.
Training and certification priority
Access to Google's advanced training programmes, product briefings and certification pathways is deeper for Premier Partners. This keeps our team current on platform changes that affect client accounts, changes which in an AI-driven advertising environment are now arriving faster and with greater consequence than at any previous point in Google Ads history.
Premier Partner in an AI-first advertising landscape
Google Ads has changed more in the past three years than in the previous decade. Performance Max campaigns have shifted how budget allocation decisions are made across the funnel. AI bidding strategies have moved from optional to near-mandatory for most campaign types. Creative quality has become a primary performance variable that the algorithm assesses and weights. First-party data architecture (CAPI, server-side conversion tracking, enhanced conversions) has become the most important foundation for any paid media performance.
Navigating this environment well requires more than historical Google experience. It requires current, deep technical competence across a platform that is actively changing its own rules. Premier Partner certification requires demonstrating that competence, in current form, every year.
The practical implication for our clients: the CAPI setup that prevents material conversion loss from under-reported signals, the Performance Max campaign structure that avoids cannibalising brand keywords, the creative testing framework that identifies winning assets before significant budget is committed. These are not things an unqualified agency can deliver consistently. Premier Partner status is the external evidence that the qualification to deliver them is current.
What this means in a connected system
Algorithm does not just run paid media as a standalone service. The Premier Partner capability sits inside the Algorithm Performance Engine, meaning the advanced Google access, the performance benchmarking and the beta capabilities are connected to the data infrastructure, the attribution work and the conversion optimisation that make the paid media investment productive in the first place.
Five years of Premier Partner status is evidence that the paid media function at Algorithm is consistently high-performing. The system it operates inside is what makes that performance translate into commercial growth for our clients.
